An Analysis On Explicitation In Chinese-English Political Consecutive Interpreting

As exchanges among countries become more frequent, interpretation plays anincreasingly important role in the international arena. Explicitation represents a greatmethod in the improvement of language output and has gradually drawn the attentionof scholars. However, the application of explicitation is, in most cases, confined totranslation, while its research into interpretation is clearly insufficient. The authornotices that parataxis makes explicitation more obvious in C-E interpreting. In thisthesis, the author uses Klaudy’s theory as the theoretical framework, and thetranscripts of the Premier’s Press Conference after the NPC and CPPCC sessions from2009to2013as the research text. After transcription and analysis, the author tries todig into explicitation in C-E political consecutive interpreting. Through qualitativeand quantitative analysis, the author aims at answering the following questions:1. How can we classify explicitation in C-E consecutive interpretation?2. What are the dominant reasons behind explicitation?3. How to achieve explicitation in C-E political consecutive interpreting?4. What are the frequencies of their usage respectively?Qualitative analysis mainly discusses the reasons and benefits of explicitation inC-E political consecutive interpreting. Based on the theory of Klaudy, the authorattempts to classify explicitation and exemplify the reasons. Through the analysis, therole of explicitation in the enhancement of communication can be seen clearly.Quantitative analysis aims at analyzing and comparing frequencies of differentexplicitation strategies. The author finds addition, substitution, paraphrase, elevationand repetition are the five major methods, among which addition is used most, whileelevation and repetition rarely occur. Analysis proves that the difference is determinedby the characteristics of political interpreting. This suggests that we should take it intofull consideration and better apply explicitation theory into the research and practice.
