Translation Of Passive Sentences In Quality Document

Considering that the author's major is business translation and the product quality document involves business management,the translation of quality documents as a focus of the business translation is worthy of attention.Besides,the author encountered many types of texts similar to the quality manual in her translation experience,as the core of an enterprise's quality management system,such text has practical value and in view of its relevance to the author's major,therefore,based on the theory of text typology and under the principle of faithfulness and expressiveness,the author selects the quality manual of Satair as the translated text tending to analyze the translation methods of passive sentences in the source text.And the author also hopes to find the typical characteristics of this type of text through the analysis,and to seek corresponding translation guidance.This translation practice report consists of five parts with the support of the English-Chinese translation practice of passive sentences in the Satair Quality Manual.The first part is the task description,which mainly introduces the definition,function and selection significance of the quality manual.And after analyzing this quality manual from the lexical and syntactic level respectively,the author finds that it involves a large number of terminologies and passive sentences.As we all know,in terms of structure and expression,there are various differences between the English and Chinese passive sentences.Therefore,how to deal with the translation of passive sentences has become a major issue in this translation practice.The second part is the process description,which mainly describes the pre-translation preparation,the translation plan and the selection of translation theory and principles.The third part focuses on quality control after translation.The fourth part is a case study based on the author's translation practice.The author concludes that in the Satair Quality Manual,there are four basic sentence structures of English passive sentences:(1)subject + be + V-ed;(2)subject + be + V-ed + by + logic subject;(3)subject+ modal verb+ be+ V-ed +(method,reason,purpose etc)adv;(4)it+ be + V-ed + that-clause.In terms of these four basic sentence structures of passive sentences,the author considers that in the process of translation,the first two types can be translated into Chinese active sentences,and also can maintain the passive form by flexible usage of passive vocabulary,such as translated into marked Chinese passive sentences with “?”,“?”,and translated into unmarked passive sentences.For the third and fourth sentence structure,they can be translated into Chinese non-subject sentences.Through the above classification,the author adopts corresponding translation strategy to ensure that the target text can achieve the purpose of faithfully conveying the original information on the basis of conforming to the Chinese expression.The last part is a summary of the translation practice report,including major reflections,limitations,and suggestions for future study.
