A Report On The Interpreting For An Indian Couple Touring The Terracotta Warriors And Horses Museum

With the improvement of the livelihood of the Chinese people and the rise of the country's status on the international stage,its tourism industry has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years.As a result,the number of foreign tourists to China has been on the rise.Through travelling,foreign tourists hope to learn about the history of China and the political,economic and cultural development that occurred in the past forty years.Since most foreigners do not speak or understand Chinese,guide interpreters are in great demand.Therefore,the importance of studying guide interpreting is evident.This report is based on the author's interpreting for a group of foreigners touring the terracotta warriors and horses museum.It describes the whole interpreting process before introducing the interpretive theory.The interpretive theory believes that the sense is the target of the interpretation.The interpreters should try to get divorced of the verbal symbols of the original speech,and master sense and the intended meaning of the speaker.Under the guidance of this theory,the author illustrates how to employ the coping strategies such as addition,omission,explanation,etc.to solve the problems the interpreter often encounters in guide interpreting with examples based on the recorded transcription.Then,the author states his major findings and limitations,as well as suggestions for further guide interpreting researches.Therefore,experience can be drawn from the interpreting practice and the author hopes this report can provide some enlightenment and reference for future guide interpreters,making contributions to the promotion of cross-cultural communication.
