A Practice Report On Interpretation And Preparation For Carbon Nanotubes Project From The Perspective Of Gile's Interpretation Comprehension Equation

In conference interpreting,the amount of information is large;the time left for interpreting is limited;the topic is often fixed and very professional.Conferences would also make interpreters nervous.Against this backdrop,interpreters must skillfully use various interpreting techniques and mobilize the knowledge reserve to solve the problems and challenges encountered in the process.However,the lack of linguistic knowledge,extra-linguistic knowledge and analytical ability will restrict the performance of interpreters.Therefore,comprehension is crucial in this activity.This thesis analyses the author's actual interpreting performance under the guidance of Gile's interpretation comprehension equation and presents the difficulties the author encountered during the task concerning listening and delivery,so as to provide coping strategies.It also introduces the author's successful preparation process using the Schema theory.This interpreting task took place at a Chinese company during the merger and acquisition of an American carbon nanotechnology company called Zyvex.All the examples come from three parts of interpretation: Zyvex's presentation,the communication between Chinese and Zyvex experts and detailed business negotiation.This thesis found out that according to Gile's interpretation comprehension equation,the difficulties that the author encountered can be divided into linguistic knowledge-related and extra-linguistic knowledge-related ones.The former includes a large number of carbon nanotubes-related professional words,American speaker's fast speaking speed,Chinese expert's heavy accent,etc.The later includes professional knowledge of high polymer materials.This thesis provides suggestions for fellow interpreters or those want to become one: to study professional knowledge,to remember technical terms based on understanding,to focus on high-frequency vocabulary,strengthen the ability to analyze.
