This paper is a report on English-Chinese translation. The source text is an excerpt from the fourth chapter of the English novel The Blue Duchess. It mainly shows the heroine Camille's simple and kind character and the desire for love. The translator selects Peter Newmark's communicative translation theory to guide this translation practice.Communicative translation theory believes that the effect of the translation on the target readers should be similar to the effect on the source readers, and translators should consider the cultural background and psychological feelings of the target readers,so that the translation does not leave any obscurity to the readers. In this translation task, under the guidance of the communicative translation theory, the translator tries to convey the content of the source text accurately so that the translation can be accepted by the target readers both in content and linguistic form. There are four chapters in the report. The first chapter describes the task background, the objective of the task, the significance of the task, and the structure of the translation report. The second chapter elaborates the whole process of the novel translation, which is divided into the translation preparation, translation stage and post-translation management. The third chapter is the case analysis. In this chapter, the translator analyzes the practical application of the communicative translation theory from the lexical level, syntactical level and discourse level. The fourth chapter mainly summarizes the findings and limitations of the report.
