In recent years, machine translation has been spilled much ink with various translation softwares emerging in the market. The efficiency and convenience of translation software has indeed been recognized by the public. But there is no evidence showing that a translation software can be completely qualified to finish a translation task. There is still a certain gap in regards to the quality of human translation and machine translation. Therefore it is necessary for human translator to correct and collaborate with the translation software to complete the translation task. This project report is based on the translation of Chapter Three and Chapter Four from Governing Cross-Border Higher Education, which was written by C.Ziguras and G.Mcburnie.The author has selected the translation of Chapter Three and Four and its analysis as the main content of the report. On the basis of extensive reading audience, the language style of source text(hereinafter referred to as ST)is accessible and with distinct stylistic markers, which characterizes the ST.It is indispensable to master the feature of ST and accomplish its style reproduction with accuracy and fluency.Youdao Translate is the appointed tool by the author. The whole text was inputted to Youdao Translate first to get its translated text, which was revised and corrected by human translator(the author)since its performance on translation of stylistic markers was barely satisfactory. In order to explore the different performances of human translation(hereinafter referred to as HT)and machine translation(hereinafter referred to as MT)on stylistic markers, under the guidance of Stylistic Markers Theory put forward by Liu Miqing, the author makes a systematic comparison between Youdao's translation and HT-corrected translation from six stylistic markers, namely phonological markers, lexical markers, syntactical markers, textual markers and markers of figures of speech, pointing out the main problems of Youdao Translate in the aspect of translation of stylistic markers.Through detailed analysis,we can see numerous drawbacks of Youdao Translate, such as lexical repetition, redundant and broken sentences, illogical relationships among paragraphs and obvious translationese.Consequently, machine translation is inseparable from human translators' modification and correction, and human translators should collaborate with software so as to improve the translation efficiency and quality to meet the customer needs. The report consists of five chapters.Chapter one is the the description of the translation task, which explains the backgrounds and goals of the translation project.Chapter two offers a detailed presentation of translation process, including pre-translation preparation,in-translation procedure and post-translation quality control.Chapter three gives a succinct introduction to the theory of Stylistic Markers Theory, which is divided into formal markers and non-formal markers.Chapter four demonstrates a limitations and merits of both HT and MT and conducts case analysis from six perspectives of stylistic markers.Chapter five draws a conclusion of this report.
