Under the context of economic globalization,cultural exchanges between countries are put on the agenda.Novel,the cultural carrier which has been given considerable attention to,receives greater popularity among the mass.Influenced and inspired by suspense novels in the West,Chinese writers has created a flood of excellent suspense novels.Yet,the status of suspense novels is lower in China than that in western countries.However,in recent years,people gradually show increasing interest in reading suspense novels.Then She Was Gone by British best-selling author Lisa Jewell has received great popularity since its publication in 2018,ranking twenty-fourth in the billboard of Amazon Books.However,in China,people hardly know the author and her series of works.The introduction of the novel,does not only enable Chinese readers to know the author and her works,but also brings references and thoughts to Chinese translators.Under the theoretical guidance of Stylistic Marker Theory proposed by Liu Miqing,a stylistic analysis of the suspense novel The She Was Gone has been carried out from the perspectives of register markers,lexical markers,syntactic markers,and markers of figures of speech.Based on the three approaches,including corresponding,recasting,and decoloring,specific translation methods and techniques have been implemented in efforts to maximize the reproduction of the style.It is discovered that translation strategies and methods vary from level to level.(1)In order to reproduce lexical and registerial markers in the target text,in most cases,translators could utilize corresponding,which in other words is to imitate both the denotative meaning and form of lexis and the narrative style of the source text;(2)when it comes to syntactic markers,translators could have alternative choices in efforts to produce a more readable and understandable translation;initially,translators ought to try corresponding,and then take recasting into consideration when the target text fails to reproduce these markers;translators could make corresponding adjustments,including splitting sentences to render and retain the intended emotive function;(3)regarding markers of figures of speech,flexible strategies are suggested to be utilized since there are over thirty rhetorical devices in English and each of them has their own characteristics;accordingly,translators are suggested to resort to corresponding and recasting so as to imitate special expressive effects of the source text;once translators find corresponding and recasting are not applicable and feasible,they could turn to decoloring and realize the reproduction by partially giving up the literal meaning and present the implied meaning for faithfulness and readers’ acceptance.The key and difficult translation points lie in the translation of syntactic markers and markers of figures of speech.Additionally,it is expected that the thesis is able to provide some references to the translation practice of novels of similar style.
