To explore the training modes for Master of Translation and Interpreting(MTI),students' translation and interpretation competence, the author surveyed nine MTI programs and the language service market in Chengdu. The survey mainly takes three research approaches: content analysis, selfcompletion questionnaires, and interviews. The survey respondents are MTI teachers, second and third year MTI students, and language service providers in Chengdu. The survey examined MTI training plans of nine universities and job descriptions of 54 language service providers. Two questionnaires have been designed respectively for students and teachers to learn about students' translation and interpretation competence.Five universities have been sampled to fill in the questionnaires. As a result,219 questionnaires completed by students have been collected, with 206 of those being valid;26 questionnaires filled by teachers have been collected, with 24 of those being valid. After analyzing the data and results of content analysis and questionnaires, the author personally interviewed 15 MTI students and 7 language service companies.Through analysis,it is concluded that: A: MTI students in Chengdu have a basic understanding of bilingual knowledge;B: the students' overall translation and interpretation skills are incompetent;C: their knowledge reserve is deficient and students seriously lack subject matter knowledge;D: students are competitive in Computer-aided translation(CAT)software and information retrieval;E: students have excellent professional ethics, but they are expected to expand their professional knowledge of translation and interpretation. On the basis of the students' translation and interpretation competence, the author has proposed a tentative training plan and suggestions, such as setting clear objectives on each translation and interpretation course, attaching more importance to subject matter knowledge, setting various forms of practical training and emphasizing the importance of translation certificates.
