As the cultural ambassador of Chinese civilization, museums are constantly showing their unique charm of China to foreign countries and promote Chinese culture to “go global”.Museum labels are an important part of a museum. And the translation research on it is not only a simple conversion between different languages, but also conveys the information of cultural relics to foreign tourists and spreads Chinese history and culture to others.Combining Skopos theory and the definitions of museum, this thesis will delve into the label translation of Xi'an Museum by means of field research, case analysis, and qualitative analysis.Skopos theory stresses that any translation activity is purposeful, which determines principles and strategies adopted in translation. And it sets out three basic rules, namely Skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule.According to the definitions of museum given by the International Council of Museums, the purposes of museum are research, education and enjoyment. As a consequence, the label translation of museums should achieve the above three purposes and adopt appropriate translation principles and strategies under the guidance of Skopos theory.Depending on the above, this thesis deeply discusses the problems existing in label translation of Xi'an Museum, analyzes the reasons for the existence of these problems, and gives corresponding revisions to the translations. The translation principles and strategies adopted in translation of museum labels are suggested subsequently.Through the research of this thesis,it is intended to attract more scholars' wide attention and profound research to improve the label translation of Xi'an Museum, and contribute to Chinese culture going out.
