Jia Pingwa,a writer of Shaanxi province,is well-known for his realistic writing approach in portraying country life just after the Chinese Cultural Revolution. He has a great literary reputation in China and is regarded as one of the earliest writers to enjoy fame abroad. However, his international literary status is inferior to that in China.Among all barriers in the way of introducing his works, the difficulty in how to translate abundant Shaanxi dialects is the one unable to overcome.Shaanxi dialect is widely used in Fei Du(ST),which makes the novel full of strong local flavor of Shaanxi. This paper firstly compares the similar and different functions of Chinese and English dialect. It is believed that translators should take these similarities and differences into full consideration and transfer these functions of the original text to the target text to ensure the accuracy of the translation.Only when these functions of dialect are taken into account, cultural information in the source text can be better reproduced in the target text. Then, based on the principles of literary translation and the particularity of dialect translation, some principles specialized for dialect translation are put forward. The main part of the article is the study of the translation methods of Shaanxi dialect in Ruined City(TT).Through analysis of the text,it is found that the translator is inclined to use literal translation, free translation to deal with dialect in Ruined City. Moreover, substitution and omission are also commonly used translation techniques in Goldblatt's translation of dialects. The translator aims at finding a balance between the acceptability and the local flavor of the translated text. However,no matter what translation methods the translator adopts, translation errors are still inevitable. This thesis is a tentative effort made on English translation of Chinese dialects, aims to make up the insufficiency of translating Chinese dialect and make some contributions to the “going out”of Chinese literature.
