A Practice Report On C-E Translation Of A Provincial Government Website Under Skopos Theory

In recent years,in order to publicize the culture,history,economy and other realities of China,governments at all levels in China have carried out Chinese-English translation projects for their websites.As the demand for C-E translation of government websites increases,it is very significant to conduct related researches.Based on the author's practice of translating X provincial government website during her internship at GTCOM,this report summarizes the translation problems as follows: 1)failure to compensate culture-loaded words,2)inadequate information for proper nouns translation,and 3)failure to achieve the readability in sentence translation.The skopos theory put forward by Hans Vermeer holds that translation should follow the three rules,namely the skopos rule,the coherence rule and the fidelity rule.In light of skopos theory,government website translation should realize the purpose of publicity,on this basis,the target text should be acceptable and readable as well as faithful to the original information.The report analyzes the aforesaid problems,and then seeks corresponding solutions under the guidance of skopos theory,thus adopting proper techniques to achieve the translation purpose.Specifically,these translation techniques are annotation,explanation,addition,paraphrase,combination and omission.The report aims to improve the author's translation quality and expects to provide references for the practice of translating government websites afterward.
