Analysis Of Documentary The Last Generation Of Bang Bang From Perspective Of Narratology

The work of Porters in the Mountain City was written by Prof.Yihong Wang with a way of creative writing and then it was adapted as TV episodes to show the viewers that for people living in Chongqing how the social changes have happened.Two decades later,a soldier and documentarian makes a documentary film to record the true story of porters who are struggling and are about to leave the historical stage of Chongqing's societal life,unfold the marginal group of Chongqing posters and reveal how it is removed by the social changes occurring in regional history.This dissertation examines the documentary Porters in the Mountain City which is filmed by the officer of a regiment of PLA and is produced by CQNews.It contains 13 episodes and is 30 minutes per episode,employing a ‘self-reflection' method to finish the filmmaking.The theories of Narratology and Content analysis will be applied as methodology to develop discussions about narrative elements,narrative theme,narrative structure,narrative perspective and narrative pattern.This study is made up of five chapters.The first one is introduction,including research background,literature review,research creativity,methodology and research design.The second chapter argues the narrative themes and the approaches used to construct such narratives patterns.The third chapter examines the structure of the documentary and explore how a frame of text has been organized by the narrative structure to show the viewers the certain values or viewpoints.The forth chapter studies the narrative perspective,making an argument on two types of perspectives:The external perspective of the witness,External perspective of bystander.The fifth chapter analyzes how the diverse narrative language has made a vivid narrative style of the documentary.In conclusion,the documentary Porters in Mountain City draws the public's attention to the decreasing industry of working as a porter.It makes objective comments on the urbanization of China's southwestern part and also express a care of humanity,showing the director's positive attitude towards the fast development of China's society and economy but also indicating a anxious consideration to those traditional marginal workers.
