This is a work report of an English-Chinese translation of Vered Ehsani's fantasy fiction Where Shadows Dance,which describes the story of a 15-year-old boy,Ash,who turns into a ghost through a magical history book and returns to the past through,and how he saves his ancestors and friends.The story is characterized with lots of scene descriptions,dialogues and psychological activities,the original readers of which derive great pleasure from its simple style,humorous language and imagination.The fifth and the sixth chapters are selected for their translation analysis which are guided by Functional Equivalence theory and used of free translation,personification,domestication and addition and other methods.This paper mainly analyzes the selected text from descriptions of the scene,dialogue,and psychological activities.In order to resolve difficulties,the translator endeavors to maximize the charm of the fiction and ensure target language readers derive the same pleasure as the readers of the source language.To achieve the fantasy artistic concept in the book,the success of the translation effect is tested against Functional Equivalence theory.This report is made up of five chapters.The first chapter is an introduction to the task of the translation: which mainly includes fantasy literature and the characteristics of literary genres;the author of the novel and translation practice materials;and research purpose and significance of this topic.The second chapter deals with translation process,which consists the preparatory work conducted before translation,including an analysis of specific characteristics of the materials,translation tools,and while-translation and proofreading.The third chapter is a brief literature review of Functional Equivalence Theory,which the principles and feasibility of the theory for translation practice is focused on.The fourth chapter is a case study,which analyzes fantasy culture-loaded terms,scene descriptions,dialogues and psychological activities,and writer tries to draw a general conclusion.The fifth chapter is a summary for the translation practice: the gains,limitations and implications.Through the translation of excerpt from the fantasy novel Where Shadows Dance and writing practice report,the writer deepens her understanding of English fantasy novel,cultivates her translation consciousness,improves her translation level and competence,and lays a foundation for future translation of similar texts.
