A Practice Report On E-C Translation Of Electronic Product Patent Specification Under Guidance Of Newmark's Text Theory

The specification is an important part of the patent application document,and the high-quality translation of the patent specification is crucial for the approval of the patent application and the rights protection.As scientific and technological innovation in various countries progresses continuously,a large number of English electronic product patent specifications need to be translated.However,for lacking professional knowledge of electronics,translator often takes more time and makes more mistakes in translating this field.Therefore,it is necessary to conduct research on the E-C translation method of electronic product patent specifications.This report summarizes the difficulties encountered by the author in translating electronic product patent specifications which falls into three levels: lexical level,mistranslation of technical terms and proper nouns,uncertainty of semi-technical terminology;syntactic level,obscurity of long sentences with non-predicate verbs,translation of passive sentences and logic confusion;textual level,overall inconsistency and inaccuracy.Since the patent specification is a form-oriented expressive text and content-oriented informative text,this paper is guided by Newmark's Semantic translation and communicative translation.Semantic translation attempts to render,as closely as the semantic and syntactic structures of the second language allow,the exact contextual meaning of the original;and communicative translation tries hard to produce on its readers an effect as close as possible to that on the readers of the original text.Finally some translation solutions are proposed based on the two translation strategies to solve the above-mentioned difficulties,including: referring to terminological dictionary,linking to knowledge background,splitting non-predicate verbs,free translation,intra-sentence logic adjustment,equivalent translation,addition or transformation.
