Report On The E-C Translation Of Electronic Patent With Trados

Patent is a significant means of protecting one’s intellectual property,and the protection is regional.According to Patent Law of PRC,applicants from other countries and regions must file application documents written in Chinese to the State Intellectual Property Office of the People’s Republic of China(SIPO).Therefore,patent translation is an essential step for successful patent application of foreign applicants.The author selects a patent from Microsoft Corporation,which falls within the electronic field.Benefited from the valuable course of internship at Beijing company of RWS group,the author utilizes Trados to complete the translation of the source text.In the report,the author elaborates the features of patent translation and the advantage of translation with assistance of Trados from three aspects which are task description,process description and case analysis.According to Newmark’s theory of text typology,the patent document is an informative text,and therefore,the absolute accuracy is required in the target text.In addition,in order to facilitate the target readers to understand,the readability cannot be ignored as well.The author encountered many problems during translation.In the part of case analysis,the author summed up the problems,performing detailed analysis on the examples in the patent document at a lexical level relating to polysemy and omission of articles,at a syntactic level relating to long and complex sentences and passive sentences,and at a discoursal level relating to thematic progression,thereby summarizing corresponding methods to solve the problems occurring in the patent translation.In the electronic field,remarkable progresses can be seen around the world,and various technical corporations with a large scale contend for applying for patents in this field in China.It would make sense to do some research about the translation of the patent.However,due to the lack of technical knowledge and inadequate translation experience of the author,there is inaccuracy and crudeness in the translation inevitably.In spite of the defects,through the report,the author sorts through own translation thoughts,accomplishes the goal of improving the quality of translation,and at the same time,hopes to provide some help and reference to translators initially trying the patent translation.
