A Report On C-E Translation Of Environmental Technology Patent Specification With MemoQ 2015

With growing emphasis put on intellectual property rights by Chinese government,thenumber of international applications for patent is dramatically increasing.High-quality translation is an important guarantee for successful international application for patent right.Considering both accuracy and speed becomes a bottleneck problem in patent translation.Based on a translation practice of an international application for patent project of Dalian University of Technology's School of Environment,the report explores strategies and techniques for enhancing quality and speed of C-E translation of patent specification in the environmental technology field,with assistance of computer aided translation software-memo Q,as well as application of Functional Equivalence Theory and Text Typology Theory.Firstly,considering language features that patent specification contains many typical patterns,terminology and repeated sentences,the translation practice uses memo Q's Translation Memory,Termbase,Pre-translation and QA to avoid repeated translation of similar texts and to ensure consistent translation of terminology.Secondly,patent specification includes three main parts: Claims,Description and Abstract.These three parts possess features of both technical texts and legal texts.In view of each part's differences in language functions and text types,the translation practice selects two complementary translation theories of functional equivalence and Text Typology Theory as theoretical guidance,based on which,the report summarizes translation strategies and techniques from lexical,syntactical and stylistic levels,which proves the applicability of the two theories in guiding patent specification translation.Based on the C-E patent specification translation practice in the environmental technology field,directing against key and difficult problems arising in the translation process,the report sums up strategies and techniques of how to apply translation technology and translation theories,which has guiding significance in translating similar type of texts.
