This paper aims to analyze 235 modified-modifier adjectives in the outline of the graded vocabulary of HSK and textbook from the perspective of grammatical and semantic features of morphemes as well as how they combine into a lexical.A detailed teaching strategy has been proposed on the basis of the grammatical function of Modified-modifier Adjectives.The grammatical characters of morphemes have been studied as a first step.It is found that there are six grammatical types of the modified morphemes,among which adjective morphemes occupied the largest percentage.While,there are only fourthree grammatical subtypes of modifiers,among which the nominal type is the most represented.As for the combination of these two morphemes,fifteen sub-categories could be formed and the “adjective + noun” combination is the most common type.Furthermore,the semantic features of modified-modifier adjectives have been deeply analyzed.It is concluded that the morphemes of modified-modifier adjectives come from various semantic domains while the semantic of the whole lexical focus on merely two domains: human beings and inanimate objects.It also found that there are three relationships between morpheme meanings and lexical meanings: direct-mapping,indirect-mapping and partial-mapping and the modified-modifier adjectives tend to be the first type.The teaching strategy of modified-modifier adjectives has been proposed after the intensive study of their grammatical and semantic behaviours.It is argued that there are four kinds of teaching methods on the basis of semantics: expansion of morpheme meanings,supplementary of implied meanings,overall explanation and emphasize the main morpheme.Moreover,there are also three kinds of teaching approaches on the ground of modified-modifier adjectives' grammatical features: clarifying grammatical features of morpheme,clarifying grammatical features of the whole lexical and comprehensive analysis of the word formation.Two samples of “Am + Nm” and “Nm +Am” have been intensively discussed in the end as a practical application of all theories that we proposed in this paper.In conclusion,a comprehensive analysis of the grammatical and semantic properties of modified-modifier adjectives has been made,which shed light on.
