A Report On E-c Translation Of Prospectus Of University Of Canterbury: In Perspective Of Adaptation Theory

In recent years,more and more Chinese students are studying abroad and the prospectus of universities is a vital way for Chinese students and their parent to learn about overseas universities.The ST dwells on the study options,postgraduate majors,lifestyle and support as well as the application and enrollment requirement of the University of Canterbury.After being authorized by the publishing house of University of Canterbury,the author selects the prospectus of UC as the source text on the basis of his interests and its practical value.The author completes the translation of PROSPECTUS 2019 OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CANTERBURY and writes the report under the guidance of the adaptation theory created by the famous Belgian linguist Jef.Verschueren.The author details the application of adaptation theory on language structure and context and proposes the corresponding translation methods to cope with the specific translation on lexical,syntactical and contextual levels.On the language structure,according to the translation principles of “adaptability”,“negotiability” and “variability”,the translation methods of conversion,amplification,omission and replacement as well as following the original syntactical order and reorganizing sentence structure are adopted to translate proper nouns,abbreviations,the adjectives and verbs as well as complex sentences in the ST.On the contextual level,linguistic context and communicative context are applied to cope with the translation of special nouns and the Polysemy in the ST.In conclusion,the author applies the adaptation theory on language structure and context to the whole translation practice,which is embodied in the translation of vocabulary and syntax of this prospectus and finds that the adaptation theory has guiding significance for translating expository text and the use of linguistic context in dealing with the polysemy is applicable and the application of communicative context in coping with special nouns is appropriate in the process of translation.The significance of this translation practice is to summarize the corresponding translation strategies and translation techniques of expository texts,so as to supply some reference for the translation and research of relevant expository texts.
