Metaphors are not only inherent in ways of thinking and all forms of human cognition, but also an important way of constructing theories.Michael Marks examined the construction of various International Relations(IR)theories mainly including Realism,Liberalism,Constructivism,Feminist IR theory and Foreign Policy DecisionMaking theories from the perspective of metaphors in his book Revisiting Metaphors in International Relations Theory.Marks systematically discussed metaphors in IR theories, the significance of them in the construction of IR theories and how to treat their importance correctly. The translator hopes to introduce the latest advanced research on IR and metaphors to Chinese readers through the translation,so as to attract them to learn about and study the relevant fields and enrich the achievements of majorcountry diplomacy with Chinese characteristics in the era.The report which is based on the translation of Chapter 4 of Revisiting Metaphors in International Relations Theory is mainly divided into four parts. The first part is a description of the translation task which briefly introduces the source of translation materials, the writer and his book and the significance of the study. The second part describes the translation process, mainly including preparation, translation and correction of the translation. The third part is the detailed analysis of translation cases in term of lexical, syntactic and discourse aspects. The fourth part is a summary in order to guide the translation of social science works and academic writings in the future.Through the practice, the translator has not only got to learn about characteristics and the writing style of academic writings, but also got to know some IR theories and realized the significance of metaphors in the theorizing process. In addition, the translator recognized that various and flexible translation strategies and techniques should be adopted during the translating process.
