The Impact Of Long Embedded Prepositional Structures On Chinese-English Simultaneous Interpreting And Coping Tactics

Syntactic differences in Chinese and English lead to severe challenges in simultaneous interpreting between these two languages,making coping tactics a focus of various studies.This thesis examines the impact of long embedded prepositional structures in Chinese on Chinese-English simultaneous interpreting and identifies coping tactics for commonly-used prepositional structures in official speeches.The thesis is anchored in the Effort Model put forward by Daniel Gile and explores the reasons why such structures may cause troubles for interpreters.It adopts quantitative analysis in evaluating whether and how long prepositional structures in Chinese affects the overall quality of simultaneous interpreting and qualitative analysis in summarizing coping tactics.The thesis concludes that long prepositional structures in Chinese do have an impact on the overall quality of Chinese-English simultaneous interpreting and proposes coping tactics,including anticipation,segmentation,lengthening EVS and paraphrasing.
