Translation Of Long English Sentences In Informative Texts From The Perspective Of Communicative Translation Theory

The translation of long sentences from English to Chinese is a major focus and difficulty in English-Chinese translation due to the differences in the structure and expression habits between these two languages.This paper,taking a research report in the field of education as the practical material,analyzes the long-sentence English-Chinese translation from both inner and inter-sentence layers with the guidance of communicative translation,thus breaking the limitation of isolated sentence translation in most previous studies.This paper believes that when translating long sentences,what should be determined first is the text type,according to which appropriate translation strategies and methods can be used as a guide and proper translation techniques can be applied in specific sentences in order to achieve its translation aims.As for translating long sentences in informative texts,Newmark?s communicative translation should be used as a guide and both inner and inter-sentence layers should be considered so as to produce on target readers a similar effect as obtained by the original readers.When choosing translation techniques,the aim of achieving accuracy,smoothness,clearness,simplicity,coherence and logicality should be well-considered.At the inner-sentence level,both words and phrases should be translated correctly and the sentence structures should be rebuilt in some cases in order to deliver information effectively.For instance,to achieve the accuracy and smoothness of the translation,abstract nouns in long sentences can be translated concretely and noun phrases can be translated into verb-object collocation using common words in Chinese.Moreover,shift and omission can be used to make the sentence smoother and clearer.At the inter-sentence level,guided by the communicative translation method and combined with the discourse cohesive devices and Chinese expression habits,the coherence and logicality between sentences can be achieved with the technique of reference and synthesis.Combining those techniques and principles,the quality of translation version can be well guaranteed eventually.
