Difficulties And Strategies In Translating Expressions With Chinese Characteristics In Biography

With the speeding up of globalization and development of advanced communication technologies,international exchanges in economy,culture,and politics have been increasingly strengthened among countries and regions.In particular,China has become more actively involved in various international affairs,resulting in more and more local elements continuously going global by way of translation.During this process,the translators need to find a dynamic balance that can not only help spread expressions with Chinese characteristics but also can ensure that it should be well understood and accepted by the foreign readers.The thesis,based on the case study on the Chinese-English translation of the biography The Ninth Panchen Lama,discussed the difficulties and strategies in translating expressions with Chinese characteristics.It is hoped that the thesis will give some guidance or inspiration to translators in translating such expressions with Chinese characteristics in other types of texts.The thesis starts with the definition of expressions with Chinese characteristics and classifications.Then it summarizes two main difficulties in translating such expressions.One is how to manage to translate such a large number of religious and historical terms.The other is how to handle the culture-loaded vocabularies and citations that are rich in connotation but sometimes illogical and incoherent.Accordingly,the thesis comes up with three translation strategies.Unification and simplification should be used for standard and effective management of these terms.As to the culture-loaded vocabularies,literal or partial translation,omission of cultural images,along with substitution for idioms should be used to convey the most appropriate or closest meaning that the original text intends to express.Finally,addition,deletion and integration of information should be used to make up for the differences in the language conversion to make the translated texts more structural,logical and coherent.
