The construction and development of a subject are inseparable from the construction and improvement of the subject theory,as is the case with international Chinese teaching subjects.With the development of China's comprehensive national strength and the improvement of its international status,international Chinese teaching has increasingly become valued both as a career and as a subject,reaching an unprecedented level of development.However,it is still under development.The academic level of international Chinese teaching is still relatively low,the theoretical research on the subject is also in its initial stage.Many theoretical problems have yet to be solved,and the subject construction needs to be futher improved.In contrast,the subject of foreign language teaching,most especially English teaching,has developed relatively well in China and has distinctive characteristics.Overall,it leads the way in terms of subject status and theoretical research level,so the theoretical research and discipline construction methods are worthy of reference for international Chinese teaching.This dissertation selected academic papers published over the past three years from the two top journals:"Foreign Language Teaching and Research" and"Language Teaching and Research",which are representative journals on the foreign language teaching discipline and the international Chinese language teaching discipline.Their topics,methods and references are compared.This comparative study revealed the basic status quo and basic differences between the current theoretical research on foreign language teaching in China and the theoretical research on international Chinese teaching.It is believed that the current research field of foreign language teaching theory is not only broad,but from the perspective of research content and research methods,its theory is innovative,as the depth and breadth of the research has reached a higher level.Relatively speaking,regardless of the depth,breadth or innovativeness of the international Chinese language teaching discipline,although it has achieved very gratifying research results,and has provided considerable assistance to the overall development of the current international Chinese language teaching discipline,however,compared with the foreign language teaching disciplines,there are still gaps.Whether it is in supporting theories,teaching theories,teaching methods,or research on Chinese characters and Chinese culture,there are still shortcomings,which also limit the overall,long-term development of the international Chinese teaching discipline.On this basis,this dissertation puts forward some specific suggestions for strengthening the theoretical research and discipline construction of international Chinese language teaching:First,it is necessary to transform the concept of disciplinary development and avoid the widespread use of communicative principles.Second,the theoretical study on the supporting disciplines,such as philosophy of language,linguistics,and pedagogy,should be strengthened.Third,we should pay more attention to exploring and digging up our own unique research fields and research methods,and further innovate the discipline as a whole.Fourth,we should strengthen research on culture,especially Chinese culture.Fifth,the depth and breadth of subject research should be strengthened,and the level of theoretical research on the international Chinese teaching subject should be improved through systematic,comprehensive research and second language teaching in other languages.
