The spatial scope of this paper is "Jiangnan region",delimited by fifteen states to the south of the Yangtze River in Tang Dynasty.The research is based on 243 tombs of Sui and Tang Dynasties found in Jiangnan area.The purpose of this study is to understand the early and late development of the Sui and Tang tombs in Jiangnan region,and to explore the source of the formation of the tomb system.The first chapter is the introduction.First of all,this paper defined the scope of time and space of this study,then according to the order of discovery,it introduced the archaeological findings of Sui and Tang tombs in Jiangnan region in detail,then summarized and evaluated the relevant research results,and finally introduced the research methods and main ideas.The second chapter is the research on tomb staging.First of all,it introduced the general situation of the tombs of Sui and Tang Dynasties in Jiangnan area,and summarized the popular situation of four kinds of tombs: Brick chamber tomb,earth pit tomb,earth cave tomb and stone chamber tomb.Then,the paper analyzed the former three in detail,focusing on the typological study of brick chamber.The first type is single chamber tomb,which was divided into five types according to the different combination relationship between the corridor and all kinds of tombs.The second type is multi chamber tomb,divided into four types according to the different shape of the outer contour of the tomb.Then,the typical funerary objects,such as“Pankou pot”,“Chicken head pot”,jar,jug,bowl and “water pot”,were studied in typology.Finally,according to the evolution of tomb form and burial objects,the Sui and Tang tombs in Jiangnan region were divided into three phases,the first phase is from Sui to early Tang,the second Mid Tang,the third late Tang,and the characteristics of each phase were summarized.The third chapter is the analysis of cultural factors.First of all,it traced back to the origin of the Sui and Tang tombs system in Jiangnan region from two aspects: the shape of the tombs and the funerary objects.The form of the tomb was discussed from “the ship tomb” and the earth cave tomb.It was found that “the ship tomb”,inherited from “the Six Dynasties”.The earth cave tomb embodied the cultural exchange between the north and the south.Based on several typical funerary objects,this paper analyzed their early development and evolution.Then it was a comparative study with other areas in the south,comparing with the “the two lake region” and “the Guangdong and Guangxi region”,and we found that there are similarities and many differences among the areas.The fourth chapter is the conclusion.This paper summarized the conclusions of this study and pointed out the existing problems.
