Objective: To investigate the mental health level of medical college freshmen in a medical college in Wuhu, explore the intervention effect of Balint group on the mental health level of medical college freshmen, and provide theoretical basis for expanding the application of Balint group in other fields.Methods:720 medical college freshmen were investigated by stratified cluster sampling.According to the criteria of the total score ?160 or the number of positive items ?43,and in accordance with the principle of informed consent,36 subjects were selected and divided into three groups by random number table method: study group, control group and blank group, each group has 12 members. The research group conducts Balint group activities once a week for 8 weeks. The control group received general group psychological counseling once a week for 8 weeks. The blank group did not intervene for the time being.Symptom self-rating scale, emotion expression scale and self-consciousness scale were used before and after the intervention to compare the differences between the groups. The intervention of the Balint group was supplemented according to the wishes of the blank group members. Results: 1.The mean score of 720 medical college freshmen on the symptom self-rating scale was 127.63±31.92.2.The scores of interpersonal relationship factors(P=0.023),anxiety factors(P=0.017)and fear factors(P=0.038)of medical college freshmen of different genders were significantly different.Specifically, the interpersonal relationship factor score(1.47±0.50)of males was significantly lower than that of females(1.56±0.51).The anxiety factor score(1.31±0.38)of male was significantly lower than that of female(1.38±0.43).The score of terror factor in males(1.27±0.38)was significantly lower than that in females(1.34±0.43).3.There were statistically significant differences in the scores of medical college freshmen from different majors in other factors(P=0.036).The scores of non-medical freshmen(1.33±0.37)on other factors were significantly lower than that of the medical freshmen(1.40±0.40).4.There was significant difference in anxiety(P=0.050)and paranoia factor(P=0.047)scores of medical college freshmen whether they were student leaders or not.Specifically, the anxiety factor scores of non-student leaders(1.38±0.42)were significantly higher than that of student leaders(1.30±0.37).The scores of non-student leaders(1.35±0.43)were significantly higher than that of student leaders(1.27±0.34).5.There were significant differences in the scores of forced and fear factors(P=0.046)among medical college freshmen from different places of origin. The scores of freshmen in urban group(1.61±0.47)were significantly lower than those in r-ural group(1.69±0.53).The scores of freshmen in rural group(1.34±0.45)were significantly higher than those in urban group(1.28±0.36).6.Before intervention, there was no statistically significant difference in the total score of the symptom self-rating scale between the study group(168.75±5.34),the control group(170.83±5.04)and the blank group(173.25±7.79)(P=0.470).There was no significant difference in self-consciousness scale score between the study group(54.92±3.09),the control group(54.67±2.84)and the blank group(55.00±3.28)(P=0.963).There was no significant difference in emotional expression scale scores between the study group(62.08±1.78),the control group(60.67±2.67)and the blank group(62.00±2.00)(P=0.166).7.After intervention: the single-factor chi-square test showed that there were statistically significant differencesin the total scores of symptom self-rating scale(P=0.001)and emotional expression scale(P=0.008)among the three groups.8.There were statistically significant differences in the total scores of the SCL-90 scale(P=0.022),the self-consciousness scale(P=0.008)and the emotional expression scale(P=0.009)before and after the intervention. There were statistically significant differences in the total scores of SCL-90scale(P=0.003)before and after intervention in the control group. There were no significant differences in the scores of all factors in the blank group before and after the intervention(P>0.05).9.By comparing the difference before and after intervention between the study group and the control group,it was found that the difference between the two groups before and after intervention in the depression subscale(P<0.05),other subscales(P<0.05)and the emotional expression scale(P<0.01)was significant. Conclusion: 1.Carrying out the Balint group activities can effectively improve the mental health level, emotional expression ability and self-awareness of medical college freshmen;General group psychological counseling can effectively improve the mental health of medical college freshmen.2.Compared with group counseling,Balint group had a better intervention effect on the emotional expression ability of medical college freshmen.
