Research On The Book Of Lord Shang:Apolpgetics Of State Power In Early China From The Perspective Of Thick Translation Theory

As one of the important figures of the legalist school,Shangyang's played an important role in the evolution of Chinese history.As a compilation of his ideological remarks,The Book of Lord Shang is an important embodiment of Legalism.However,compared with the works of other schools of thought in the pre-Qin period,the The Book of Lord Shang has received relatively less attention from Chinese scholars and translators.The Book of Lord Shang:Apologetics of State Power in Early China(2017)is the latest English translation,and it consists of a large number of paratexts and rich language adjustments.Therefore,this thesis takes The Book of Lord Shang(2017)as the research object,trying to solve the following questions: What thick translation strategies does Yuri embody in his translation? How does the "Apologetics" reflect in the translation? Except for the translation,what additional text did Yuri add to promote Shang Yang and his ideas? From which perspective did those paratexts promote The Book of Lord Shang to the target readers?Guided by the perspective of thick translation theory,this research uses descriptive research methods.In this context,it focuses on the phenomenon of thick translation in Yuri's translation of The Book of Lord Shang.The study found that in the paratexts,the translator Yuri questioned that The Book of Lord Shang was just an anthology of controversy,and analyzed the ideas of Shang Yang presented in The Book of Lord Shang.In the translation,Yuri's defense of the Shang Jun's thoughts is reflected in the following aspects: to make up for the omitted information in the original text that affects the reader's understanding;to repeat the importance of the core concept in the original text,three chapters in the original texts are translated into a whole chapter to reduce language compulsion.The translator's main purpose is to guide the readers to pay attention to the content of The Book of Lord Shang,and use the above methods to help readers understand the value of accepting the ideas in the book.Yuri introduced to readers the ideas of the willing to change,respect for law,and chasing for the prosperity of the country in the Book of Lord Shang,which still has important practical significance.Chinese culture has a long history and profound knowledge.In translation,in addition to supplementing background information and cultural knowledge,we can also use this combination of "translation" and "theory".Reasonable and effective arguments are more conducive to readers' acceptance of the translation and the cultural value contained in the translation.
