A Report On The Whispered Interpretation Of The Opening And Closing Ceremonies Of The 11th National Traditional Games Of Ethnic Minorities

The opening and closing ceremonies of the 11 th National Traditional Games of Ethnic Minorities were held at the Olympic Sports Center in Zhengzhou,Henan province in September,2019.For foreigners who love Chinese culture,this is undoubtedly a cultural treasure trove.It is the author's real honor to act as an interpreter in the opening and closing ceremonies to interpret the speeches and commentary for Rowena Chua,a Chinese culture enthusiast from the Philippines.The interpreting task consists of translating from Chinese to English utilizing whispered interpreting.This report will show the analysis of this interpreting based on the whispered interpreting practice.Based on this practice,and under the guidance of the Skopos Theory of German functionalist Vermeer,pros and cons of the preparation process,interpretation,and interpreting skills were shown.According to the Skopos Theory,translation is a kind of interlingual communication to meet the needs of the text recipient.When translating,the translator should first consider whether the given translation can meet the needs of the text recipient or not,and then select the appropriate translation methods and spread the translation text according to the principle of the Skopos Theory,so as to realize the expected functions of communication.The practice of this whispered interpreting demands prolonged interpreting periods and involves an extensive knowledge of Chinese culture.Therefore,the author is required to have the necessary stamina along with an abundant reserve of cultural knowledge.Under the guidance of the Skopos Theory,this interpreting practice adopts the interpreting methods of Omission,Combination,Annotation,Transposition,Analogy and Paraphrase.Omission and Combination solve the problems that may arise when the content of the original text is too lengthy to understand.Annotation,Transposition,Analogy and Paraphrase solve a series of problems such as if the translated text is unable to make the listener feel the real meaning of the source text,and unable to achieve the best effect of the interpreting,and so on.Under the guidance of the Skopos Theory,the author used a series of interpreting methods in this practice task,which has accomplished well and has honed the author's interpreting skills further.The practice report focuses on analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of the interpreting practice,deliberating the obstacles in understanding,the defects in expression,and tries to put forward some methods,so as to provide experience for future interpreting practice.
