A Report On Whispered Interpreting

This report,based on the author’s field practice of whispered interpreting at the interview session of an Internet Summit,analyzes whispered interpreting along with interpreting strategies under the theoretical guidance of Gile’s Effort Models.According to previous studies as well as the author’s own experience,whispered interpreting falls into the category of simultaneous interpreting.Therefore,during the author’s field practice of whispered interpreting,the author found out that some strategies which are usually applied to simultaneous interpreting are also applicable to whispered interpreting.Based on the author’s practice,four strategies are frequently used during the whispered interpreting process,namely syntactic linearity,anticipation,summarization and omission.This report discusses the application of these four interpreting strategies in the process of whispered interpreting with detailed case analysis,and it is hoped that this report might shed some light on other interpreters and scholars who are interested in whispered interpreting as well as Daniel Gile’s Effort Models.
