On Listening Comprehension And Improvement Measures In E-C Consecutive Interpreting In Light Of Gile's Interpretation Comprehension Equation

International Conference on "The Search for Deliberative Democracy in Asia",The 3rd International Conference on Grassroots and Local Governance was held by Institute for China Rural Studies,Central China Normal University on May 17-18,2019.On this occasion,several academic theme lectures were held in CCNU as well.Among them,there was a lecture entitled "Social Security System in the Declining Birthrate and Aging Society".The speaker,Professor Yasunori Sone,is a professor at the Graduate School of Media and Governance at Keio University,Japan.The author is honored to be the consecutive interpreter in this lecture.This practice report is based on the lecture and the whole interpretation process.During the whole lecture,Prof.Yasunori Sone speaks typical "Japlish"(Japanese-style English),which tends to cause comprehension obstacles for the interpreter.Based on Gile's Interpretation Comprehension Equation(C=KL+ELK+A),this report will analyze three major causes of listening comprehension obstacles with examples,including lack of knowledge of the language(Japlish),insufficient extra-lingual knowledge,and lack of deliberate analysis.Taking this academic lecture as an example,the knowledge of the language mainly refers to the familiarity of the characteristics of Japlish,such as pronunciation,word-using,and syntax habits.Extra-linguistic knowledge mainly includes encyclopedic knowledge,professional knowledge,and situational knowledge.Deliberative analysis indicates motif analysis and logic analysis of what the speaker has said.Besides,the author will put forward improvement measures to cope with such listening comprehension obstacles.Based on Gile's Interpretation Comprehension Equation,the improvement measures mainly include enhancing knowledge in the language,expanding extra-linguistic knowledge,and improving the ability of analysis.Taking the listening comprehension obstacles in this lecture into consideration,enhancing knowledge of the language mainly refers to summarizing the common rules of Japlish pronunciation,knowing well the Japlish word-using habits,and getting familiar with the Japlish syntax habits.Expanding extra-language knowledge mainly includes keeping up with current events,collecting as much subject-related knowledge as possible,and preparing situational knowledge before interpretation.Improving the ability of analysis mainly indicates grasping the speaker's motif and following the speaker's logic.It is hoped that these improvement measures proposed in this practice report will be useful for similar interpretation practices in the future.
