Nowadays,the research of key competencies has attracted much attention,and the research of English key competencies has also become one of the hot topics in domestic education in recent years by the release of relevant documents in China.Based on the language ability,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability of the key competencies of English discipline,this study makes a detailed analysis of the five textbooks(including the first volume of the seventh grade,the second volume of the seventh grade,the first volume of eighth grade,the second volume of eighth grade,and the full volume of ninth grade)in junior high school English textbooks of the edition of People's Education Press(PEP)by adopting text analysis and interview method and discusses the following three issues:Can junior high school English teaching materials of PEP edition help to cultivate the students' key competencies of English discipline? If so,how does the textbooks reflect the cultivation of students' key competencies of English discipline? If not,what are the main problems in the textbook? How could the teachers make better use of the textbooks to cultivate students' key competencies of English?Through the macro analysis of the teaching materials,it is found that the set of teaching materials is related to the cultivation of four abilities in the key competencies of English discipline,namely,language ability,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability,and can basically accomplish the cultivation of four abilities in the key competencies of English discipline among students.Through the micro analysis of the teaching materials,the training of students' language ability in teaching materials mainly includes the cultivation of students' interest in English learning,the cultivation of students' ability to understand and use oral English,and the cultivation of students' written discourse and written expression ability.That is to say,the cultivation of students' cultural awareness is mainly reflected in helping students to understand cultural phenomena and form multicultural values and cultural contrast ability;the cultivation of students' thinking quality is mainly reflected in helping students form thinking profundity,criticism,creativity,flexibility and agility;the cultivation of learning ability is mainly reflected in the cultivation of students' cognitive strategies and communication strategies.Based on the analysis of teaching materials,some training strategies are put forward for teachers to make use of the textbook to improve the four abilities of students' key competencies of English discipline.Firstly,the basic four skills should be strengthened,listening,speaking,reading,and writing.Secondly,the cultural content is to be clarified and the cultural awareness is to be enhanced.Thirdly,five characteristics are to be cultivated to shape the thinking quality.Fourthly,the teaching materials can be used flexibly to provide a timely guidance and strengthen students' learning ability.At the end of the thesis,the limitations of this study are pointed out,which paves the way for follow-up researchers.
