As the core idea of the new curriculum reform,key competence plays an important role in the process of basic education.More and more attention has been paid to this topic by the theoretical and practical circles.According to the English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School(2017),English courses should cultivate students' English key competencies.Thus,the reform of English key competencies in various schools has been a hot issue.However,English education in some rural areas is affected by their own conditions and students' sources,which makes it difficult to cultivate students' English key competencies.The purpose of this paper is to understand the current situation of the cultivation of English key competencies in the areas,analyze the outstanding problems and its causes,discuss and give some suggestions correspondingly.Through data collection and literature reading,this paper expounds the specific connotation of competence,key competence,English key competencies.On this basis,the specific contents of English key competencies(language ability,cultural awareness,thinking quality,learning ability)are further explained.In this study,480 students and 120 teachers from six rural high schools in western Inner Mongolia were investigated through the method of questionnaire,interview and classroom observation in October 2019.The specific research questions discussed in this paper are asfollows:1.What is the current situation of English Key competencies in senior high schools of western Inner Mongolia rural areas?2.What problems exist in the cultivation of English key competencies in senior high schools of western Inner Mongolia rural areas?3.What are the causes of problems in the cultivation of English Key competencies in senior high schools of western Inner Mongolian rural areas?The author uses SPSS 17.0 to analyze the relevant data,combined with interviews and classroom observation,and obtains the following research results: First,the cultivation of English key competencies in senior high schools of western Inner Mongolian rural areas is not optimistic as a whole.The development of students' language ability,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability is not balanced and need to be improved urgently.Second,the existing problems are:high school students in these areas have low interest in English learning and only pay attention to the accumulation of language knowledge.Although they can recognize and respect foreign culture,they seldom involve in the cultivation of cultural awareness in daily learning.Students' learning efficiency is low and their autonomous learning ability is poor,so they cannot use learning strategies to effectively promote the development of their English key competencies.Finally,through further analysis,the causes affecting the English key competencies of senior high schools in these areas are obtained,including teachers,students,curriculum setting and educational policy.At the end of the study,the author puts forward some suggestionson how to improve the English key competencies in senior high schools of western Inner Mongolian rural areas.
