Study Of English Translation Of Sanzijing From The Perspective Of Intercultural Communication

With its rich cultural connotations and allusions,Sanzijing is not only a traditional enlightening textbook for children,but also a starting point for foreign people to know about China.By translating Sanzijing,Chinese history,culture,people and thoughts have been introduced to the rest of the world,so that more people in other countries can understand China,the mysterious Eastern country.Many English versions of Sanzijing have been published since the 19 th century,one of which was even selected as one of the series of moral education materials for children by UNESCO in 1989.And,thereafter,a wave of translation of Sanzijing was set off and pushed time and time again.From the perspective of intercultural communication,this thesis takes Zhao Yanchun's English translation The Three Word Primer as a case study,classifies the types of traditional culture involved in the book and analyzes the translation methods and strategies adopted by Zhao.Literature research and a descriptive approach of study on Zhao's translation are applied to work out the following problems:(1)What strategies does Zhao Yanchun use to translate the Chinese culture-loaded words or information so that the Western readers can better understand them?(2)Are there any problems in The Three Word Primer? And if so,what are the possible solutions?(3)How is the reception of The Three Word Primer in English-speaking countries,and what are the English readers' responses to Zhao's translation? Through the analysis,it is concluded that there is a combination of domestication and foreignization in Zhao's The Three Word Primer and a flexible use of literal translation,free translation and transliteration.Zhao Yanchun also shows his creativity in translating and introducing traditional Chinese culture to Western readers.In a word,although there still exist some problems in Zhao Yanchun's The Three Word Primer,his great attempt in his translation has aroused native English speakers' interests and attention by strictly following the form of source text and faithfully transferring the meaning of source text.The thesis discusses how to enable the Western readers to better understand Chinese traditional culture,remove the cultural barriers between the East and the West,and how to make the cultural connotation in the translation naturally and easily accepted by Western readers.It is hoped that this study will provide a reference for the translation and introduction of traditional Chinese culture,highlight the function and role of translation in intercultural communication,so as to come up with a guide for promoting the integration of Chinese culture into the modern world by means of translation.
