Difficulties And Coping Strategies In Consecutive Interpreting For Impromptu Speech Under The Guidance Of Interpretive Theory

Impromptu speech refers to a speech delivered spontaneously or planned in advance but presented freely.It can be frequently seen at formal or informal conference,debate,interview and seminar.There have been many researches on impromptu speech in the interpreting field at home and abroad,but most studies center on the comparison between the interpreting of impromptu speech and the speech read from a written manuscript.Few studies discuss the interpreting process and the strategies of interpreting impromptu speech.Even though there are a few studies exploring the strategies,they mainly focus on simultaneous interpreting.Considering impromptu speech is frequently seen in various occasions and consecutive interpreting is often required in formal event,the thesis will explore the strategies of consecutive interpreting of impromptu speech.Interpretive theory holds that interpreting is a communicative act and its ultimate goal is to convey the communicative sense.In the light of interpretive theory,the object of interpreting is the sense instead of the language forms.So far many studies on impromptu speech from the perspective of interpretive theory have focused on the simultaneous interpreting while rare studies provide a comprehensive discussion on the difficulties and the coping strategies of consecutive interpreting of impromptu speech.Therefore,the thesis takes the mock interpreting of the impromptu speeches made by Jack Ma,Pony Ma and Robin Li at Big Data Expo 2018 as an example to discuss the difficulties in consecutive interpreting of impromptu speech and the coping strategies from the aspects of comprehension and re-expression.The thesis analyzes the difficulties manifested at the stage of comprehension and the stage of re-expression.As to the comprehension stage,the ambiguous expressions enhance the difficulty of understanding the exact meaning of the source speech.As for the re-expression stage,redundancy,information loss,inappropriate ways to handle cultural gap and unclear logic jointly contribute to the poor production of interpretation.Under the guidance of interpretive theory,the thesis explores the strategies including activating cognitive context,expanding cognitive baggage,simplification,liberal translation,information amplification and clarification of logical relationship to cope with the above problems.After analyzing the mock interpreting,the author comes to the conclusion:at the comprehension stage,the interpreter is supposed to make full use of the cognitive context to comprehend the ambiguous expressions.Besides,the interpreter should accumulate knowledge and expand cognitive baggage so as to improve the comprehension ability.At the re-expression stage,the interpreter can use simplification skills to deal with redundancy,employ the strategy of free translation to avoid information loss,apply the strategy of information amplification to bridge cultural gap and clarify the logical relationship and make it overt in the target language.The author analyzes the difficulties in interpreting impromptu speech and explores the feasibility of the coping strategies against the difficulties in comprehension and re-expression under the guidance of interpretive theory.The thesis is expected to provide some inspirations for related theoretical and practical studies.
