Consecutive Interpretation Strategies On Informal Expressions In Impromptu Speeches

The material of this consecutive interpreting is Raymond Francis' s health lecture which gives a brief introduction about his new books: The Great American Health Hoax,Never Feel Old Again and a new health system he created.This lecture has a great impact on medical experts and researchers,as well as on people who care about their health.Based on the recording of the consecutive interpreting,problems encountered in the process of interpreting are summarized and feasible interpreting strategies are proposed.The form of the lecture is impromptu speech.During interpreting,the informal expression of the speaker brought some difficulties to the interpreter.Problems can be concluded into three aspects: the problems of expression ambiguity,the problems of logical relation and the problems of parenthesis.Combined with the interpretive theory,corresponding strategies are proposed.For the problems of expression ambiguity,strategies of addition and explicitation are adopted;for the problems of logical relation,strategies of addition and omission are adopted;for the problems of information insertion,strategies of sequential adjustment and paraphrase are adopted.The report aims to provide interpreters with feasible strategies for the problems,try to reduce their stress during interpreting,in order to improve the quality of the interpretation.
