Effectiveness Of The Strategies For C-E Consecutive Interpreting Of Impromptu Speech In Light Of The Interpretive Theory

Chinese impromptu speech is highly common for interpreters recently.It is characterized by orality,redundant or incomplete information,and unsound logic,rendering its interpreting a formidable task.Consecutive interpreting,however,adds another layer of difficulty with its accuracy expectation and the audience's attention compared with simultaneous interpreting.Within a limited interval under consecutive interpreting,interpreters must grasp the right strategies to turn improvised speeches into logical translation.Interpreters need to understand the speaker's meaning,rise above the source language's distraction and translate the same meaning in the target language.Many scholars have proposed strategies to interpret impromptu speeches.This thesis,based on the interpretation model of interpretive theory,summarizes these strategies into the following three aspects,understanding,deverbalizing,and expressing.Interpreters should continually polish their language proficiency and enrich background knowledge for the long run,grasp speaker's meaning and deverbalize it on-site,and delete redundant information,supplement missing messages,and highlight the logicTo test the effectiveness of these strategies,the author undertook an empirical analysis method.Nine interpreter subjects with differentiated interpreting experience were invited and divided into three groups to translate the same impromptu speech.Their interpretation was transcribed and analyzed in a quantitative and qualitative manner.The analysis showed the hypothesis that the translation quality is positively correlated with the frequency of the proposed strategies was correct.This thesis tries to answer the following questions:why is it difficult to interpret impromptu speeches from Chinese to English?How should interpreters handle C-E impromptu speeches well?Are the proposed strategies effective?Through background research and experiment,the author will find the answer and offer references for professional and student interpreters to better handle C-E impromptu speeches consecutively.
