Strategies For C-E Consecutive Interpreting In The Light Of Interpretive Theory

This interpreting practice report takes the case of the lecture "The Development of China's State-owned Economy and Private Economy" delivered at a seminar of the Ministry of Commerce as an example and fully records the pre-translation preparation,on-site interpretation and post-translation feedback of the interpretation task.Through the transcription and annotation of on-site recordings,this article concludes that the features of this Chinese speaker's speech are in line with the language characteristics of impromptu speeches.Among these characteristics,there are four types that easily affect the interpretation process:incoherent sentences,unfinished sentences,redundant sentences,and terms needing explanation.This report aims to analyze the above four situations with the data of more detailed categories and explore suitable interpreting strategies.The data shows that among the four types of characteristics,redundant sentences accounted for the highest proportion,in which the repetition of synonyms appeared the most.But this does not mean that the other three categories pose less difficulty for the interpreting process.To tackle the challenges of interpreting brought by the linguistic characteristics of impromptu speeches,this article draws on the concept of deverbalization proposed in interpretive theory and analyzes typical examples to find out the specific coping strategies for the above four situations,contributing ideas for the consecutive interpreting of impromptu Chinese speech and for future teaching practice.
