A Study On The Conflicts And Integration Between Chinese And American Cultures From The Perspective Of Intercultural Communication

Intercultural communication holds that culture plays a vital role in intercultural communication.Furthermore,values are the major factors that affect communication.Being one of the most prominent theories in the field of intercultural communication,Hofstede's cultural dimensions theory is of vital importance.Cultural dimensions theory is an important theory,which is used to measure cultural differences in different countries.Influenced by different cultural dimensions,people who grow up in different social and cultural backgrounds receive different cultural education and edification.Due to differences in geography,customs,ideas,cultures and other aspects,people experience many contradictions and conflicts when communicating with others,causing communication failure in the end.Therefore,both parties should correctly view the impact of different cultural dimensions and envisage cultural differences,so as to facilitate the smooth progress of communication.This thesis is intimately combined with the text.Based on Hofstede's cultural dimensions theory,this paper regards Amy Tan's novel The Bonesetter's Daughter as a corpus and attempts to analyze the differences among the characters in the aspects of ideological values,national characters and ways of communication.By analyzing the changes of the relationship among three generations of women in the novel,the paper intends to study how different cultural dimensions affect communication for the readers,so that the readers can better understand the influence of culture on communication,and can summarize the trend of Chinese and American cultures from conflicts to integration.In recent years,many scholars have studied the novel The Bonesetter's Daughter from the aspects of feminism,racism,identity and trauma.However,this paper will appreciate the significant literary work from the perspective of cultural dimensions theory.By analyzing the transformation of the relationship among three generations of women as well as a pair of lovers in The Bonesetter's Daughter,it can be found that the conflicts between Chinese and American cultures are not accidental,which is caused by the differences between different cultural dimensions.Different cultural dimensions have an important influence on the conflicts and integration of culture.Chinese and American cultures from conflicts to integration is a process,and cultural integration is an inevitable choice of intercultural communication.Culture itself is not good or bad.The integration of Chinese and American cultures is not the cultural annexation,nor the cultural hegemony,but the two cultures influence and complement to each other.Moreover,culture is also dynamic,and the dynamic development of cultures has opened up a broader space for the integration of Chinese and American cultures.In the end,the analysis of the process of Chinese and American cultures from conflicts to integration is beneficial to people to better understand and envisage the cultural differences,and it also has an important practical significance in the aspects of training and improving people's awareness and competence of intercultural communication.At the same time,it also helps readers better understand the contradictions among characters and provides reference for readers to interpret the characters and understand cultural differences.In addition,based on Hofstede's cultural dimensions theory,the thesis analyzes the conflicts and integration of The Bonesetter's Daughter,which also develops a new perspective on the study of literary works.
