On June 28,2019,the author served as a consecutive interpreter at the closing ceremony of 2019 Chinese Language and Culture Summer Camp of the Confucius Institute at Kazan Federal University and Southern Utah University, which was hosted by Hunan Normal University. After the assignment is completed, the interpreter reviewed the whole interpreting process, collected the interpreting materials, and conducted an in-depth analysis of the coping methods used in the interpreting process. The interpreter analyzes the speeches of the speakers at the lexical level and the syntactic level, most of which are manuscript speeches, with some impromptu speeches involved. At the word level, there are many redundant words,four-character idioms and inappropriate words. At the syntactic level, there are many broken sentences, sentences with inappropriate subjects or unclear logic. In response to these characteristics, the interpreter analyzes the practical materials under the guidance of the Interpretative Theory to get corresponding coping methods, hoping to provide reference for herself and other interpreters in similar situations in the future. This report consists of five parts, which are task description, interpreting process, the Interpretative Theory, case analysis by deverbalization, and conclusion. The first chapter mainly introduces information about the ceremony, including the background of holding the ceremony, the purpose ofresearching the interpretation, the analysis of the corpus and the language speakers. In the second chapter, the interpreter reviews and analyzes each step from pre-interpretation to post-interpretation in detail. She divides the process into four sections: pre-task preparation,on-site preparation, site performance, and post-task summary, trying her best to restore details and objectively evaluate her interpretation. In chapter 3,the interpreter briefly introduces the concept of the Interpretative Theory and its triangular model, and specifically analyzes the meaning of“deverbalization” to provide theoretical support for case analysis. The fourth chapter is the core chapter of this thesis. The interpreter takes“deverbalization” as a guide to analyze the specific cases in the interpreting process. The author analyzes the language characteristics of all speakers in this Chinese-English consecutive interpretation, and discusses the interpretation methods that can be adopted at the lexical level and the syntactic level. In the end,it is concluded that in terms of the lexical level, the method of omission can be used in solving the problems of words repetition and four-character idioms, while substitution can be used to correct inappropriate words and adjust rhetorical difference. In terms of syntactic level, interpreters can reorganize broken sentences and sentences with unclear logic, and adjust the order of sentences with improper subjects and non-equivalent language habits. In her final conclusion, the interpreter reviews the inspiration she received from the interpretation process and tries to analyze her deficiency objectively,so as to provide more experience to the future interpreting practice. |
