With the advancement of high-quality intensive development of higher education in the new era,university governance system and capability modernization are crucial to promoting the national "Double First-Class" university building and enhancing their comprehensive competitiveness as well.At present,the research work on American university governance is at top level in the world,and many universities and colleges in China regard its successful model and lesson in the university governance as a mirror.Therefore,the translation of American university governance works is of great significance to the modernization of university governance system and capability.Functional Equivalence Theory,proposed by Eugene A.Nida,a well-known American linguist and translators,puts emphasis on the “dynamic equivalence translation” between the two languages rather than an absolute rendering of all of the content and form of the original so that the target-text readers could obtain the similar reading response with the original-text readers.The author,guided by Eugene Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory as well as based on the translation practice taken from Chapter 7 to 9 of How to Run a College,tentatively tries to analyze some typical translation examples in translation from lexical,syntactic and textual level with the method of “One Principle and Four Standards” the author presented to discuss how to use the relevant translation skills and methods in dealing with the above three aspects of translation.As far as lexical level,a discussion of the translation methods is made in proper nouns,professional terms and general vocabulary,the issues in translation of long and difficult sentences are explored at syntactic level,and reproduction of the stylistic and logic relation in translation is discussed at textual level.From what has been discussed above,the author may reasonably arrive at the following conclusions: For one thing,the feeling of the target language reader should be respected in translating informative texts,and the translation strategies and methods,such as conversion of parts of speech,abstraction,semantic extension,division,the change of voices,circumscription and amplification are flexibly used to faithfully reproduce the original information and achieve functional equivalence;for another,the text cases study shows that Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory is applicable to dealing with the translation of informative texts.Through the translation practice and report writing,the author has a deeper understanding of translating informative texts using Functional Equivalence Theory,thus laying a solid foundation for translation of different types of texts in the future.
