English Translation Report Of The Ordinary World (Excerpts)

Since the 18 th National Congress of the Communist Party of China(CPC),the CPC central committee with comrade Xi Jinping as general secretary has attached great importance to external publicity and made a series of important work deployments and theory elaboration.Meanwhile,with China’s political and economic influence increasing,Chinese culture is spreading to the world gradually.As we know,there are a large number of excellent Chinese literary works in our country,which describe our excellent culture,unique customs and the hardworking and positive spirit of Chinese people.Therefore,the translation of these literary works with Chinese characteristics has become a new requirement for translators in the new era so that foreign readers can learn more about China.Lu Yao’s novel The Ordinary World truly represents the social life in urban and rural areas of northwestern China in the 1970 s and 1980 s and the great changes in people’s minds.This novel covers the living habits,social customs,religious beliefs,values and other aspects of northwestern China.Therefore,the translation of The Ordinary World will not only help foreign readers to understand the unique culture and customs of northwestern China as well as the inner world of ordinary Chinese,but also spread the hard-working,kind-hearted and unremitting character of Chinese people to the world.Under the guidance of Skopos theory,this translation report explores the difficulties encountered in the process of translation and the translation strategies adopted to solve these difficulties.As for the translation of culture-loaded words,the paper writer mainly adopted four methods: transliteration with explanatory notes,literal translation with explanatory notes,liberal translation and interpretive translation.For the translation of Chinese sentences in chronicle style,the writer mainly analyzed from two aspects: rearrangement of the logical relationship among the continuous small sentences and translation of the continuous verb structures in Chinese sentences in chronicle style.Through the analysis of the difficulties encountered in the process of translation and the translation strategies adopted to solve these difficulties,this translation report provides good research materials for the translation of realistic literary works with Chinese characteristics and also provides references for the further translation studies of similar literary works.
