A Report On The Translation Of Greed By The Theory Of Functional Equivalence

In recent years,science fiction has become a trend in the world.As a result,a growing number of translations has come out,which in turn leads to more research on them.Science fiction pays great attention to reader's response,which is consistent with the functional equivalence theory proposed by Eugene Nida.The core of functional equivalence theory is reader's response,which therefore can be used as the guideline for the translation of science fiction.This report takes L·Ron·Hubbard's Greed as the source text,uses the functional equivalence theory of Nida as the guideline,and introduces the characteristics of science fiction and the guiding significance of Nida.And it discusses at the lexical,sentence and cohesion levels,and the difficulties in the process of translation and the translation strategies and methods involved.This report draws the following conclusions.The characteristics of science fiction require that the first task of the translator should be to ensure that the source-language reader and the receptor-language reader understand and appreciate the translated text in a more or less the same way.Therefore the translated text should be accurate at the lexical level,fluent and in conformity with Chinese logic at the sentence level,and natural and semantically coherent.In addition,it is advisable to keep the writing style of the original.
