Recently, science fiction publishing has aroused a great upsurge in the world. The translation of science fiction has become the studying subject of more scholarsand experts. However, there are only few works on translation study of science fiction. In China and abroad, the study of science fiction translation lags behind its practicalworks. In the field of literature and translation, the definitions of science fiction havenot achieved consensus. As a common literature genre, science fiction is attached farless importance to, compared with other genres, let alone the systematic study. Thebook translation would be a systematic study on science fiction translation.Skulduggery Pleasant is a typical science fiction. The main readers of the bookare teenagers. In the process of the book translation, the young readers’ characteristicsand affection should be taken into account. Functional equivalence, proposed byEugene A.Nida, is defined as “in terms of the degree to which the receptors of themessage in the receptor language respond to it in substantially the same manner as thereceptors in the source language.”(Eugene. A.Nida:1993). From the definition, weknow that functional equivalence focuses on the receptors’ response, which could be agood theory to guide science fiction translation. In the process of translation, I took the translation methods of domestication, amplification, division, negation and four-character phrases, adopting the functionalequivalence theory to make the source text reproduced acceptable to the target readers,so as to achieve “functional equivalence”.The report is divided into four chapters. Chapter I is description of the translationtask. Chapter II is description of the translation process. Chapter III is the analysis onthe translation cases, which analyzes problems I meet in the process of translation, and the translation theory and translation methods I apply. The last chapter is theconclusion. In this chapter, I summarize what I gain from the translation task and listthe unresolved problems.
