The classroom of teaching Chinese as a foreign language is the main place for international students to learn Chinese.The performance of the teachers,who play an important role in classroom teaching,will have a direct impact on international students' learning in Chinese.This paper focuses on teachers' conscious silence in classroom teaching.The object of study is teachers at college of international exchange at Anhui Normal University,teachers at international college at University of Science and Technology of China,and the model lesson of teaching Chinese as a foreign language at Beijing Language and Culture University.From the perspective of practical exploration,with the combination of quantitative and qualitative research techniques,this research attempts to come up with the guidance of teachers' conscious silence to classroom instruction steps.Hopefully,the research can provide some more practical teaching strategies and methods for TCSL teachers,especially for new teachers.First of all,the paper comes up with the theoretical basis of classroom silence,such as,“latency time”,“student-centered”,and“non-verbal communication”.Next,based on the function of theoretical analysis in teaching Chinese as a foreign language,the paper defines silence and discusses it systematically,including the etymology of silence,the explanation of silence in different subjects,the discrepancy of “conscious silence” and “negative silence”,and the research scope of this paper.Secondly,with the method of semi-structured interview and classroom observation,the paper investigates and analyzes the phenomenon that elements of teachers and students affect teachers' conscious silence in classroom and its reason.Finally,the paper brings up the value and function of teachers' conscious silence and analyzes its functional value,practice in classroom,and its impact on teaching and teacher-student interaction.Then,it puts forward correspondinginstruction advice,aiming to help teachers improve their teaching quality and interact with students more effectively.Thus,the classroom teaching can fare better.
