With the development of globalization and increasingly frequent cultural exchanges, more and more foreign literary works are introduced to China. In this process, the translation of literary works plays an important role which gives rise to the demand for qualified translation. In order to produce a qualified translation, the proper application of translation theory is crucial.Christian Nord,a representative of the German functional school, proposed a translation-oriented text analysis model which provides guidance for translation teaching, translation practice and translation research. The text analysis model can ensure a comprehensive and correct understanding of the text which provides foundation for the specific decisions of translators in the translation process. However, its application into translation practice mainly focuses on non-literary works. In order to verify the feasibility of the text analysis model to guide the practice of literary translation, this paper selects Karel John's award-winning work,An Age of Understanding,as the translation material.Based on Nord's text analysis model, this paper firstly makes a comprehensive analysis of the extratextual factors and intratextual factors of the source text and target text. Then, three kinds of translation problems are identified, which are pragmatic translation problems, linguistic translation problems and text-specific translation problems respectively.Based on the principle of combining documentary translation with instrumental translation, the author proposes corresponding solutions to the translation problems.Liberal translation, corresponding translation and annotation are used to tackle pragmatic translation problems;converting passive voice sentences to active sentences, shift of sentence components and omission are used to deal with linguistic translation problems;adaptation, addition and literal translation are used to solve text-specific translation problems.Through the above research, the author finds that the Nord's text analysis model is applicable to literary translation which can provide new ideas for the practice of literary translation.
