In the works of educated youth writers,the image of the eldest son constitutes an image sequence with important cultural connotations.Typical examples include Bai Jiaxuan,Bai Xiaowen,Lu Zhaopeng,Heiwa in Chen Zhongshi's Bai Luyuan,Sui Baopu in Zhang Wei's Ancient Boat,Feng Jiachang in Li Peifu's City Lamp and Liu Lanting in Li Rui's Silver City Story,which not only reflect the typical characteristics of the times,but also contain the author's cultural choices.After the Cultural Revolution,educated writers faced the internal crisis of faith reconstruction.Since the reform and opening up,the materialized values brought by the social transformation have further deepened the spiritual dilemma of intellectuals.In addition to the multi-cultural collision brought by the integration of China and the world,the educated youth generation is in a very symbolic choice in spiritual culture.They rearrange the relationship between traditional culture and modern culture in the eyes of writers.The image of the eldest son carries their thinking and becomes a symbol of the contradiction between tradition and modernity.According to the different attitude towards traditional culture,the image of eldest son in contemporary family novels can be divided into three types : " guard the builder "," evil and destroyer " and " go back and forth ".Bai Jiaxuan,along with Baopu as the representative of the "Shoucheng builder" presents the characteristics of cultural conservation,benevolence,loyalty and tolerance to seek perfection;Bai Xiaowen,Lu Zhaopeng and Feng Jiachang as the representative of the "evil subversive" has the rebellious characteristics of rebellious family ethics and social ethics;Heiwa and Liu Lanting as the representative of the "go back" before the youth period,and then from the political,family and cultural aspects of the completion of the conscious return.Compared with the image of the eldest son in modern family novels,the image of the eldest son in the view of educated young writers presents a new quality of "tragicality "," subversive" and "compound ".The tragicality of "being a builder" is embodied in the recognition of traditional culture and the writing of life value.The subversion of the "evil destroyer" is reflected by the mutual identity of the long and young in form and the complete rebellion in content.The compound nature of "go and return" shows the identity characteristic of "three as one" in form,and has the cultural value of blending ancient and modern in content.Chen Zhongshi and Li Peifu still have boundless attachment to the land when the rapid development of modern civilization has created a new panic of mankind.Li Rui maintains the absolute sobriety and independence of life consciousness.And Zhang Wei advocates finding an outlet from traditional culture.The image of the eldest son of educated youth inherits the spiritual core of Bozhong's image in family novels since the May 4th Movement,is also a highly generalization of several cultural choices of the son of the Republic,and is also a figurative presentation of the life experience of educated youth writers.
