English homework,as a supplement to classroom teaching,is an important part of English education.Homework is not only an irreplaceable part of the teaching process,but also has an important impact on students' knowledge,ability and learning attitude.In the current high school English teaching,teachers generally pay great attention to the design of classroom teaching,but tend to ignore the design of English homework.In order to respond to the current English curriculum reform and make homework have high efficiency to help achieve the learning objectives,it is necessary to get an overall understanding of the situation of high school English homework.So,the author conducted a survey study on effectiveness of the homework in No.5 High School of Guiyang and find out what problems existed with the design of homework for the students in Grade One and Grade Two.The study was conducted with questionnaire survey and interview with 100 students and 11 English teachers,and a close observation of homework samples designed by several teachers.Based on the theory of multiple intelligences and the new curriculum theory,the study was designed and conducted with the questions to investigate and understand the following questions:(1)What is the specific performance of the current senior high school English homework design in terms of the type,presentation and content of the homework?(2)Is the current homework effective to achieve the multi-objectives of English course? Is it conducive to cultivate students' key competence? Why or why not?(3)What are the problems with the current English homework in this local school? The major findings of the study are:(1)Teachers pay more attention to accumulative homework and less attention to practical homework in homework design.(2)Teachers still followed the concept of “exam-oriented education” in order to consolidate students' knowledge in class,improve their English scores and train their exam-oriented skills.(3)The homework design is lack of scientific,hierarchy and planning.The study provides some information for the teachers of the school so that they could pay more attention to effectiveness of homework for the students in the future,and also gives some ideas for exploring the effective pattern of high school English homework design.In this way,teachers can carry out diversified and personalized high school English homework design based on the theory of multiple intelligence in the future,which can not only help students deepen their understanding of what they have learned,but also enhance the cultivation of students' key competences and stimulate their potential of learning English.
