The U.S.economy has developed rapidly following the ending of World War II,and the urbanization for the country keeps accelerating.Chapter three in Wilderness City analyzes three writers and their city-featured master works to reveal the inner contradiction of the closed urban space and the extensity.With the purpose of introducing the works to readers,Wilderness City,as a literary criticism text,intends to make the readers have some deep thinking through the critical comments.The German functionalist,Christiane Nord,puts forward the "function plus loyalty" theory,which has some guiding significance on literary criticism translation.It takes the translation outline,source-text analysis and identification of translation problems as the core concepts for the principle.This report uses the chapter three of Wilderness City as material.Combined with the features of literary criticism,and with different translation strategies being applied,the report analyzes and solves problems in terms of vocabulary and syntax discovered during the translation,which in a manner provides directions for the translation of other similar source text.The report includes four parts.Part one is the task description,it includes task background and the introduction of the book;Part two is the preparations,which is primarily about the features of the source text,the theoretical guidance and the expected function of target text;Part three is the case study,which demonstrates how to solve the translation problems based on the theory of "function plus loyalty" and instrumental translation,and then explores the translation methods for literary criticism text;Part four is the conclusion,which summarizes the strong points of the translation and reflections on deficiency and weakness found out through the translation practice.
