Translation Methods Of Passive Sentences In Social Science Text From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

This translation practice paper is based on the 21 st and 22 nd chapters of A Companion to the History of the Book.These two chapters are related to the history of the book in Britain and the other European countries in the 19 th century.In view of the language features of frequently used English passives in the source text,the author discusses the common methods in the translation of English passives through case analysis from the perspective of functional equivalence theory.There are five chapters in this report.The first chapter is an introduction to the translation practice including task background and task significance.The next chapter shows translation process including preparation before translation,translation,and proofreading after translation.The third chapter introduces functional equivalence theory.With the high frequency of English passives in source text,the author concludes the translation requirements and methods of English passives from the perspective of functional equivalence theory.The following chapter is a case study of English passives.Two translation methods of English passives,translating into passives with a marker and translating into sentences without a marker,are illustrated with specific cases.Translating into passives with a marker refers to translating English passives into Chinese passives with a marker which includes explicit passive sentences with a marker and half-explicit passive sentences with a marker.Translating into sentences without a marker means to translate English passives into implicit passive sentences,active sentences or subjectless sentences when the marker of passive sentences can't be reserved.The last chapter summarizes what the author has learned in E-C translation practice and provides feasible suggestions for future tasks.
