A Report On The Translation Of Chapter 4 Of Basic Criminal Law

With the accelerating of globalization,now all countries are continually deepening their communications in politics,economy and culture,which demands us to have a basic understanding of the legal systems in western countries.The translation of legal English texts is an efficient way of being familiar with the history and status of western legal systems.So the author chose Chapter 4 of Basic Criminal Law-----Crimes against the Person: Violence as the research project.In the translation process,the author of this report found that passive sentences are widely used in the source text.Chinese passive sentences are quite different from those in English.Therefore,how to translate these English passive sentences correctly and accurately is the biggest difficulty to be solved.Here under the guidance of functional equivalence theory,the author used literal translation and free translation and corresponding skills to solve this problem: in order to reach the formal equivalence and semantic equivalence simultaneously,the author translated English passive sentences of the source text into those in Chinese by literal translation.Otherwise,the author would change the passive structure of source sentences and translate them into those of active in Chinese by three free translation skills: addition,omission and conversion.By this means the semantic equivalence can be reached preferentially.It's hoped that this translation report will be helpful in addressing similar problems in other legal English texts and improving the legal system construction in our country.
