Richard Ellmann is a famous American biographer and literary critic.He had been writing Oscar Wilde since 1967(below referred as Wilde),which took twenty years.Compared with traditional biographies,Ellmann’s Wilde highlighted the very distinctive elements of modern biographies and textual features.At the same time,he also incorporated Wilde into his own Irish biographies series,which is in the history of biographies extremely rare.This article will do the resrarch on Ellmann’s Wilde from three perspectives.The introductory part of this article combs the development history of the creation and research of Wilde’s biographies.Then,from the perspective of modern biographies,the author explores the modern biographies of Ellmann’s Wilde from three aspects: life,personality and interpretation.On the basis of combing the biographical elements,starting from the perspective of comparative biographies,by comparing the two biographies,the author found the difference between the two Wilde and summed up the difference between Ellmann’s Wilde and the early 20 th century biography,refined the distinctive features of Wilde.Finally,from the perspective of the Irish biography series,the author explores the important position of the Wilde in the Ellmann Irish Biography Trilogy,and analyzes the Wilde from the perspective of cultural identity and national marginality.
